Revelation 5:1-14
Worthy is the Lamb

n chapter 4 John showed us the throne. In chapter 5 he shows us who really holds the power. A scroll appears in the right hand of the One on the throne, sealed with seven seals. A mighty angel throws down a challenge to every power in existence: Who is worthy to open it? And the answer is silence. John weeps. Because if the scroll cannot be opened, God's plan cannot be revealed. Then an elder speaks: "Do not weep. See — the Lion of the tribe of Judah has conquered." John turns to see the Lion. What he sees instead is a Lamb — "arnion," a little lamb, standing as if it had been slaughtered. The wound is not the disqualification. The wound is the credential. This is the great reversal that unveils the beast. Empire says worthiness is proven by military victory, survival, and dominance. The Lamb says worthiness is proven by sacrifice. And a Church shaped by the Lion tends toward violence, power, and crusade. A Church shaped by the slaughtered Lamb tends toward martyrdom and service. Only one of those is what God has been calling us to.
